Thoughts - musings on solar panels and renewable energy

This page is for thoughts and ideas about solar and the environment in general.  I'm passionate about solar and think and read about it daily.  This will be a space for these thoughts.

Solar all the time?

Dan Diehl

I usually comment on something I found online, either an article about solar or something solar related like electric cars or energy-efficient homes. Today I’m just going to talk about my thoughts. A thought I had today, was what would it take to have the whole world powered by Solar all the time. We know there’s enough energy reaching the earth every day from the sun the power everything many times over. It seems like the problem is distributing the energy around the globe and collecting it in all the sunny spots. What will the future look like? Will there be massive underground wires? Undersea cables ferrying electrons across oceans to other continents? Will the world be connected in one giant grid of electricity and data connections? That seems to be the ultimate answer in my eyes. No batteries needed as long as the sun is shining somewhere on the globe. Of course I’m not an electrical engineer so I don’t know if this is even feasible or not, but it seems like it could be.

Time will tell. Will Solar continue to be distributed on individual buildings or only connected to larger arrays in the desert? Will certain countries dominate and export electricity to the rest of the world like they do now with nuclear plants? Or will it continue to be a mix of residential, commercial and utilities scale projects?

Batteries will improve. They will get smaller, cheaper and hold more energy. Some people and businesses will have batteries, or maybe everyone will. Maybe the grid will go away and we’ll each have our own battery pack to power our homes. Who knows?
